Internet Payday Loans - Good idea?

You can get your cash advance loan online

For better or for worse, you can not obtain a payday loan over the Internet. Proponents of this say it’s easier and safer than borrowing from a store. Is that the case?

Payday loans are quick and easy online - maybe.

The quick cash industry has exploded during the last decade, as thousands of payday loan stores have popped up in the nearly 40 states where they are currently legal. The rapid growth of this industry can be attributed to a number of things - the downturn in the economy of 2000-2001, the fact that we are all living beyond our means and the fact that many jobs pay less, adjusted for inflation, than they did in the 1970’s.

Because of these and other factors, it is now quite easy to walk or drive down to your local cash advance store and take out a small, two week loan of up to $500. The amounts that you may borrow vary from state to state as do the fees, which typically range from $10 to $30 per $100 borrowed. You pay the loan back in two weeks’ time, or you may “roll over” the loan for another two weeks.

While these stores are quite successful, some people are leery of visiting them because they are often located in neighborhoods that aren’t the best. It is no secret that most customers of such stores are blue collar workers who do not have access to other sources of loans, such as credit cards or banks. The owners of these stores locate them where their customers are likely to be, and sometimes that means that they are not in the safest neighborhoods in town. So what do you do if you do not want to go there? What if you do not live near a payday loan store?

The answer is simple - you can now obtain short-term payday loans over the Internet. The process is the same for an Internet loan as it is for an in-person loan; you must be employed, you must provide proof of income, and you must provide a canceled check from your checking account. Generally, these sites do not conduct credit checks; the information listed above is usually all they need. Approval typically takes just a few hours and you can often have the funds transferred to your bank account overnight. Repayment, as with most such financial products, is due in two weeks’ time. You may or may not be able to roll the advance over again; this will vary from site to site, as each one must comply with the laws of the state in which the business resides.

Is an online advance a good idea? As a rule, we do not recommend quick cash advances, due to their relatively high cost on an annual basis, but if you need a short term loan, you need one. Be sure to read the fine print on the Website; many online lenders deliberately elect to do business in states that have relatively lax banking laws, such as Utah. Also be aware that there are inherent risks associated with providing personal financial information to someone you do not know. While most such businesses are legitimate, it would be easy to conduct identity theft using personal information obtained from borrowers online.

Convenient? Yes, but know the risks.
